Donating, Selling, Recycling and Garbage Disposal

Donating

What Not to Donate:

Broken, stained and non-working things should not be dropped off at thrift stores. They will often throw these things in the garbage (if they accept them from you at all) because they usually don’t get purchased in their store. You could try giving them away for free on FaceBook Marketplace, FaceBook bidding wars groups, or on Craigslist. I was able to give away a rusty umbrella stand because the purchaser planned to paint it. I gave away a small slimy pool with a leak because he wanted the working pump that came with it. Some people look for broken electronics or appliances because they have the skills to fix them or use their parts to fix newer ones. Take photos and be honest about any problems or flaws.

Where to drop off clothes, books. small items, and sometimes furniture:

  • Downtown Langley: Value Village, Mission Thrift Store, Talize, Thrifter’s Paradise, Salvation Army Gateway of Hope, Hope For Children Thrift Store, Penny Pincher
  • Walnut Grove: Second Story Treasures, Salvation Army Thrift Store
  • Clayton: For the Love of Thrifting
  • Downtown Cloverdale: BC SPCA Thrift Store
  • South Surrey: Turnabout accepts donations for Vancouver’s Dress for Success program for women (if clothes are a current style and current season), Peace Arch Hospice Society, Salvation Army

Some places will only take recent books because they have found the older ones don’t sell.

Ishtar Women’s Resource Society accepts donations of clothes and some other items by appointment. Review their list of what they accept and then call to set up an appointment.

Or have it picked up from your home:
